Southgate’s tournament plan, from what I can tell, has been to rely on his safest players getting him through the group, using the young new players sparingly. It clearly hasn’t worked for him. A braver manager would’ve gambled on Mainoo, Palmer and Gordon to start, benching one of Foden or Bellingham. Mainoo behind both Trent and Gallagher has been his worst mistake, IMO, but all three should’ve played significantly more. I hope he swings for the fences in the knockout rounds and plays the youngsters, telling them to go out there and play without fear. Who cares if we lose in the second round or the final when it’s all or nothing? But ones thing is for sure, if we don’t play the kids, we won’t win.

I've backed Southgate every time but last night was down to him. He made the change with Mainoo and we were of course slightly better. Palmer came on and made it slightly better again the same for Gordon but he wasn't given a pathetic amount of time. Why Bellingham didn't come off instead of Foden is baffling. Foden was creating something but Bellingham was gone. We weren't going to lose unless something unrealistic was going to happen but we would have scored if we had fresh legs on earlier.i feel Southgate didn't really want England to win without Bellingham ironic as head said earlier that England need to win without him. We would have learnt about the players more this way

Think about it... Scotland have no right to do any better - they dont have the players and honestly qualifying out of their qualification group was a HUGE achievement. Scotland have a small population firstly... That makes a big difference. Secondly is the Footballing infrastructure - which is hugely skewed to Glasgow and is miles behind some of the top leagues, particularly England. Scottish domestic football has stagnated and dropped levels since the 90s, to the point where its below Championship now. Celtic & Rangers would not have players of the quality of Henrik Larsson, Brian Laudrup anymore - which makes a difference - training and playing alongside quality players in turn brings up the players quality. Not only that, but because of the level, Celtic and Rangers are incentivised to buy foreign players as its a quicker way to success than developing talent, and there is massive pool of players that are good enough across world leagues to play. The fact is, since early 2000s we dont have the same quality of players. The SFA and thr Scottish clubs really dropped the ball. To improve (in the long term) they need to do some of the following; 1a. Try join English league - Celtic & Rangers will grow their long term income and could become global giants If thats not possible: 1b. Change the league format to 2 leagues of 18 teams - allow Rangers, Celtic & other good academies 2nd / youth teams play in the 2nd division (with another division below that). 2. Create a centre of excellence training program that is not run by clubs. Develop talent and use the coaches we have. This needs to he top quality and id suggest between glasgow & Edinburgh in central scotland. Maybe do a draft for talent each year USA style. Clubs could then sell good youth prosepects to bigger teams to spread wealth or keep them and try build around them. Make a rule to have certain % Scottish (think clairefontaine or lilleshaw in the past - we can't rely on clubs and by pooling can get better facilities for young players and coaches). We used to have a lot of coaches passing their qualifications in Scotland, including the likes of Mourinho. I would put lots of funds into hiring coaches and ex pro's at this facility, for training, coaching and all sorts 3. Try and combine SLC and the English League Cup to create a "champions of Britain" cup. Makes it more epic and big revenue games. 4. Make a foreign player quota - this will reduce the overall numbers, but increase the quality of foreign imports. This has benefits to Scottish talent. 5. Try and launch some youth exchange programs - with other countries like holland, belgium etc where young players can be exchanged on loan for a season or two tonround their development in football and mentality. 6. Commercial growth - this is the hardest one, but initially I would suggest that a program is started to fund a star player at each SPFL team, to attract shirt sales. I would also prioritise launching a netflix style SFPL app where subscribers can watch any and all games (including shows and interviews) - largely funded by Celtic & Rangers fans worldwide that benefits the SFPL. After doing these basics - they would have something to start building on and would be developing better players - we can then hope to export more Scottish talent to the top leagues.

Austrian here: I don't think that we would destroy England in the way of dominating them and winning easily. But we would fight for every ball and probably win most duels and press like there's no tomorrow. However, our biggest weakness is creativity and scoring goals. It will definitely be a fun match. On our best day, we can win against anyone, but we also still have problems.

It was never a penalty. Armstrong stepped across and initiated the contact, if he actually just focussed on the ball instead of the man he would’ve been able to get a good shot away.

All teams are affected by injuries and suspensions by the third group match, but Scotland didn't have the depth to cover the loss of Hickey, Patterson, Ferguson and Tierney. Dykes is no superstar but at least would have pressured opposition defences. The mystery for me was why Shankland wasn't given a longer run. Looked more productive and troublesome in twenty minutes than Adams did in three matches.
